God didn’t deliver his people at the moment and in the way the author prayed. Nevertheless, the author affirmed that the never-ending mercies of Yahweh and are new in the morning. In fact, he has been delivering his people in his time since the old testament and beyond.

Sin, Confess & Salvation (Romans 7:15-25)

Romans 7:15-25

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good.17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

21 I find then the [a]principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God [b]in the inner man, 23 but I see a different law in [c]the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner [d]of the law of sin which is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [e]the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

  1. Romans 7:21 Lit law
  2. Romans 7:22 Or concerning
  3. Romans 7:23 Lit my members
  4. Romans 7:23 Lit in
  5. Romans 7:24 Or this body of death

v15-v16 – one player – that’s “I”

v17 – two players – “I” and the sin”

v18 – whatever it is that is dwelling in you is not you

v19-21 – evil and sin is the nature of that “nothing good” which indwells
vs Romans 6:12 – “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.”
-> this is our responsibility not to let sin reign in our mortal body

v22 – when we act out of character with who we really are, the Holy Spirit immediately brings conviction before of our union with God. This explain the endless sin-confess cycle.
To break the cycle – 1) submit to God 2) resist the devil i.e. “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)  and 3) close the door and don’t open it again!

v23 – “waging war again the law of the mind” – the war is in mind (a thought, then on flesh?)

v24 – It means “miserable man that I am” instead of “wicked or sinful man that I am” – he knows and want to do right but he can’t

v25 – the victory is Jesus Christ our lord ( Romans 8)

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life [a]inChrist Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death….

Q – Jesus condemned sin in the flesh and thought him we our sinful nature could be condemned as well??
